Artica is pleased to announce artist Sébastien Robert will be joining us at Artica in November and December 2024 to work on his project The Lights Which Can Be Heard.

Sébastien Robert (b. 1993, Nantes, FR) is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher whose work bridges visual and sound art, technology, science, and ethnography. His ongoing research cycle, You’re no Bird of Paradise, focuses on preserving disappearing Indigenous sonic rituals and cosmologies, transforming them into long-lasting, tangible art forms.

During his residency at Artica Svalbard, Robert will work on his project The Lights Which Can Be Heard, which aims to capture the sounds of the Northern Lights in collaboration with radio astronomer Rob Stammes. This project will explore new methods to document these ephemeral sounds, blending them with voices from the local community to reflect on the impact of climate change, tourism, and geopolitics on the Arctic.

During his residency Robert will collaborate with filmmaker Louise Ernandez, sound artist Irwin Barbé, producer Lisa Bakk Bøen, and radio astronomer Rob Stammes.

Robert’s residency is supported by Amarte Fonds, Institut Français, and the Mondriaan Fund for visual arts and cultural heritage.
