Join Artica and Longyearbyen Folkebibliotek as we host journalist and researcher Elida Høeg.

For this evening’s presentation Høeg will discuss her recent book Hope is in the streets, which came out in January 2021 at Fanfare forlag. The publication focuses on the impacts of the financial crisis in Barcelona and how people deal personally with political problems. She will centre the talk around two subjects relevant to Longyearbyen: Housing and tourism.

Housing bubble, financial crisis, corruption, gentrification and precariousness. This is how the challenges in Barcelona and other European cities over the last decade are often explained. Nevertheless, the concepts can seem abstract and difficult to grasp. 'Hope is in the streets' is an attempt to take them down to the ground. Through unexpected and engaging testimonies from a variety of different people, standing on different sides of the debate, the book shows how these phenomenons play out in everyday life, on the street level - and how a city can become a place where people find together and resist seemingly overwhelming challenges.

Elida Høeg (b. 1990) lives and works between Oslo and Barcelona. Journalist and researcher, she investigates transnational political issues such as the climate crisis, technology and territorial conflicts through text and sound. Høeg has been in Longyearbyen since 9th September as part of the residency programme, nominated by our key partner Norsk Pen.
